Fingal Triathlon Club Celebrates 40^th Anniversary of Skerries Triathlon

Fingal Triathlon Club is delighted to celebrate the 40^th Anniversary of the first modern triathlon in Ireland by hosting a sprint triathlon and aquabike race in Skerries on July 16, 2023.

The event is part of the Triathlon Ireland National Series races and features a sprint triathlon, plus a National Championship Aquabike and Youth Series race.

“We are delighted to celebrate the 40^th Anniversary of Skerries Triathlon which was organised by Maurice Mullins on July 3^rd, 1983 and it is a tribute to his legacy that the Skerries Triathlon continues to this day,” said Fingal Triathlon Club Race Director, Darragh Farrelly.   “It is a huge honour and endorsement of the professionalism of our club to be awarded Triathlon Ireland National Series races making this race even more special; we can guarantee entrants a day to remember,” he added.

Marking four decades is an important milestone for the sport of triathlon in Ireland and Darren Coombes, CEO of Triathlon Ireland says:

We can all reflect on how much the sport has changed over the decades since the inaugural event, but there are some constants at play that don’t change and are vitally integral to the ongoing success of this event - a hugely dedicated volunteer base, strong partnerships with the local community and a stunningly beautiful race venue. Skerries Triathlon was one of our first mass participation events following COVID restrictions, and the shared joy on display from volunteers, athletes young and old and spectators was such a boost to the triathlon community in 2022. We look forward to the 40th Anniversary event in 2023, I am sure it will be a spectacular success”  

Triathlon is a three sport event comprising swimming, cycling and running, in that order, and participants can opt to train for and enter different race distances.   The Triathlon Ireland National Series Sprint race comprises a 750m swim followed by a 20k bike and a 5k run.  

The National Championship Aquabike distance is a two part discipline comprising a 750m swim followed by a 25k flat bike course.

The Club will have six age group junior triathlon races also on July 16, three of which are part of Triathlon Ireland’s Youth National Series.

“We are thrilled to have three of our age group junior races as part of the Youth National Series.  Coaching and developing our junior club members is our passion and it is our aim to grow the sport of triathlon in the younger age group in Fingal,” said Fingal Triathlon Club Junior Race Director, Mary Crosbie.

Triathlon Ireland is the national governing body for triathlon in Ireland helping athletes at all levels unlock their potential and realise their personal ambitions.  Triathlon Ireland’s National Series is run over the course of the summer in four different locations around the country and at varying distances.  Athletes entering the National Series must race four triathlons for a final score to be in with a chance of winning an age group overall prize at the end of the season.

Fingal Triathlon Club was set up in 2009 by a group of highly motivated Fingallians who wanted to get fit, have some variety in their training and meet like-minded people.  The Club is based around the rolling hills of North County Dublin and caters for men, women and juniors of all ages and abilities.
