Skerries Triathlon
Sunday July 16 was a very special day in our Club's calendar as we celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the Skerries Triathlon which was organised by Maurice Mullins in 1983.
Tullamore TC’s Michael Carroll returned to Skerries to compete for the first time since taking part in 1983, and came second in his age group. Michael described his experience at the 1983 event;
“Very different, much shorter. We were all just completely making it up as we went along really. I can just remember it was a very hot day. I was last out of the water and I wasn’t cycling at the time but I did make up some time on the bike. I was a good runner so I finished ninth eventually after the run.”
“Maurice Mullins was a brilliant man, I remember him well he was such a character. A lovely man, I got to know him over the years after that. It was the start of my journey and I’ve really loved it all the way.”
Not many people realise that Skerries was the birthplace of the first triathlon race in Ireland and what a legacy Maurice Mullins left. Fingal Triathlon Club is proud to host this Triathlon Ireland National Series Sprint, National Aquabike Championships and the National Youth Series.
More than 600 adults and 200 juniors were treated to a beautiful sunrise on arrival at registration and lovely weather throughout the day with just a sprinkling of rain as the bike segment as athletes headed out on the bike.
The Triathlon Ireland National Series Sprint race comprises a 750m swim followed by a 20k bike and a 5k run. The National Championship Aquabike distance is a two-part discipline comprising a 750m swim followed by a 25k flat bike course.
